Lincoln Storage - About Us
In 1916, Arthur B. Compton Sr. started The Lincoln Storage Company at 315 E. First St. in Dayton, Ohio. We were the first household goods storage facility in the entire area. He later passed the business onto his son Arthur B. Compton Jr., who in 1963 sold it to Thomas M. Bates. Sr. In January of 1994 Mr. Bates sold Lincoln to Jeffrey L. Peace, the current President and CEO.
Lincoln Storage’s history as a trusted moving and storage company goes back…even as far back as 100+ years. When the Wright Exhibition Team, famously comprised of the Wright brothers, disbanded, the teams remaining aircraft was sold, including Frank Coffyn’s Engine #20.
The engine was sold to Detroit residents Frederick and Russell Alger, and the Algers then donated their Model “B” with Engine #20 to the University of Michigan Flying Club in 1920. Once in the University’s hands, F.E. Loudy piloted and flew the plane and it crashed very shortly after takeoff. Though the aircraft itself was lost, Engine #20 was salvaged.
Engine #20 was stored in Lincoln Storage Company’s warehouse. Loudy, nearly a decade later, wrote a letter to Orville Wright letting him know the engine was stored with Lincoln Storage Company and prompted him to pay for the engine to be returned to the university. Though Orville Wright never responded, the Wright Experience eventually found this letter from Loudy. The team tracked down the descendants from the Lincoln Storage Company who attested to the engine still being in storage.
The Wright Experience purchased Engine #20 back in 1999, after being safely and securely stored with Lincoln Storage for 84 years. Here at Lincoln Storage, we are proud of our rich history and bring the same quality storage service to your belongings present day as we did the antique Engine #20 all those years ago.
In the early 1930's, Allied Van Lines was formed as the first interstate moving van line in America. Lincoln Storage was one of their first 28 charter agents. Today we remain a significant part of the world wide Allied Network.
In the 1970's we established our international moving division and began arranging relocations all over the world. Over the past 40 years, as the global marketplace has grown we have grown with it. Our size and consistent quality has resulted in numerous industry awards. We have handled thousands of international moves over the past four decades.
The early 1980's brought deregulation to the trucking industry. Lincoln Storage responded by remaining a top rated Allied Agent while successfully diversifying our services. First came the Commercial Moving Division (CMD) in 1983. Our focus on specializing in office and industrial moving and storage contributed to our growth and led us into a product Warehousing and Distribution Division that is still very busy.
In 1984 we began to store and manage files and records for Dayton area corporations. Our Records Management Division (RMD) was the very first professional records center in Dayton. In fact our warehouse at 315 E First St. is now filled with records. We have expanded into two additional facilities all owned by Lincoln Storage. We have kept pace over the last two decades with both the physical nature of records storage and the all important technology side of the business. We have a state of the art bar-coded retrieval system in place.
Recently we have added our Freight Hauling Division and its growth and success is very encouraging.
We are proud of our long history and fine reputation. We welcome the opportunity to service any needs you may have within the wide scope of our expertise.
